Regarding today’s Philly Clout column about Dilworth Park, we thank the Daily News for highlighting a point of confusion created by one of our policies that we have immediately rectified. We also want to take this opportunity to outline our overall approach.
Philadelphia's post-pandemic recovery is at a critical juncture. Center City has recaptured 90% of foot traffic, and a residential population exceeding 2019 levels. But now, that progress is threatened by sweeping and drastic service cuts coupled with significant fare increases to balance SEPTA’s budget in the absence of additional state funding.
Recovery is progressing by nearly all measures: employment, hotel occupancy, retail and restaurant sales, transit ridership, pedestrian volumes and city tax collections are all up. Job recovery is slow but steady and most significantly, Philadelphia’s unemployment rate fell in October, to the lowest point since 1990.
