America’s Garden Capital Maze Celebrates Regional Gardens and Arboreta

PHILADELPHIA (November 11, 2016) – Today, Veterans Day, the Rothman Institute Ice Rinkopens for its third season on the north side of Dilworth Park with a salute to veterans, accompanied by the return of the popular Rothman Institute Cabin, with a new menu by Brûlée Catering at the Dilworth Park Air Grille. Veterans and active military with ID skate free today and visitors to the Rothman Institute Cabin can buy a Sam Adams beer for soldiers past and present with the Sam Adams Pour One Forward program. Rink, cabin and grille will remain open for business until Sunday, February 26, 2017.

On the south side of the park debuting today is the Dilworth Park Wintergarden, featuring America’s Garden Capital Maze, and, opening on November 19, is the Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market. The Winter Season at Dilworth Park is presented by Rothman Institute, William Penn Foundation and through generous support from Subaru, Capital One, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Temple University and 6abc.

Admission to the Rothman Rink is $3 for children 10 and under, $5 for adults, and skate rental is $10. Hours are Noon to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; Noon to 11:00 p.m. on Friday; 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday; and Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. Learn to Skatelessons are available, with five-week sessions for $99, including lessons, admission and skate rental. Sled Skating, sponsored by Magee, offers adults and children with disabilities the opportunity to reserve a sled to use on January 7 and February 4, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. For questions or to sign up for Learn to Skate, please email LESSONS@RINKMANAGEMENT.COM, and for questions regarding Sled Skating, or to reserve a sled, please email SLEDS@RINKMANAGEMENT.COM. America’s Garden Capital Maze, anchored at its center by a welcoming gazebo, is designed by Groundswell Design Group for both children and adults and features willow-branch archways, evergreens, trees, perennials, shrubs, topiary sculptures, and winter plantings adorned with twinkling mini-lights. The Wintergarden and Maze celebrates in William Penn’s original Center Square the 32 regional gardens and arboreta that make this region America’s Garden Capital. The CCD has partnered with Greater Philadelphia Gardens to celebrate the region’s horticultural heritage. America’s Garden Capital Maze was made possible by a generous $300,000 multi-year grant from the William Penn Foundation to the Center City District Foundation (CCDF).

The Rothman Institute Cabin offers an artfully crafted menu with offerings from Air Grille by Brûlée Catering, including items to purchase and share such as Poutine and Chili. Adults 21 and over can enjoy a glass of wine, a specialty cocktail featuring Jim Beam Apple or Effen Blood Orange Vodka, or a Sam Adams craft beer starting at 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 11:00 a.m. on weekends.

Tuesday nights are College Nights at the Rothman Institute Ice Rink, from November 15 through February 21, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. College students pay $2 for admission (skate rental not included) for an evening of fun with friends.

If you enjoyed summer’s Center City District Sips, you’ll love Cocktails and Cold OnesEvery Wednesday night from November 16 through February 22, 2017, you can stop by the Rothman Institute Cabin for Cocktails and Cold Ones with $5 Jim Beam Apple and Effen Blood Orange Vodka cocktails, $4 wine, and $3 Sam Adams drafts, along with specially priced food items from the Dilworth Park Air Grille, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

On Sundays, from November 13 through February 26, from Noon to 2:00 p.m., The Philadelphia Orchestra Presents Symphony Sundays, so you can enjoy music recorded by The Philadelphia Orchestra while you skate at the Rothman Institute Ice Rink.
