To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Center City District Restaurant Week, we’ll be spending time celebrating the chefs—and some of their favorite recipes—as we get closer to the event.
This week, we’re excited to share some stories and insights from Ann Jamavan at Jasmine Rice, located right by Rittenhouse Square. Opened by husband-wife duo Tom and Ann, Jasmine Rice offers a homemade, flexible Thai menu with dishes that can be personalized to the customers, whether it be for spice level or to make it vegan. In an interview for 6ABC, Tom notes that his wife “does everything from scratch… It’s a homecooked meal that we enjoy every day at home.”
What inspired your journey to become a chef?
My mom’s authentic Thai home cooking.
What inspired your approach to cooking?
My desire to live a healthy lifestyle.
What has been the proudest moment of your journey as a chef?
Opening my restaurant Jasmine Rice.
Can you tell us about the recipe you shared, including the story behind it, its inspiration, and why you chose to submit it?
Thai Papaya Salad is a dish that everyone can enjoy. It can be paired with many dishes we serve. Being that it is one of the most popular street foods in Thailand makes it a perfect choice to showcase our Thai authenticity.
How have you seen Center City evolve since opening?
Center City has evolved through continued development in new businesses as well as University expansions such as Drexel and Penn. These developments have enhanced the appearance of the city and they bring more people to the city which is good for business.
What differentiates your Thai offerings from other places across the city?
Jasmine Rice offers a unique authenticity not only in the preparation of the dishes but also in the warm, friendly “at home” hospitality.
