Twenty Weeks, Twenty Stories: Dim Sum House by Jane G’s

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Center City District Restaurant Week, we’ll be spending time celebrating the chefs—and some of their favorite recipes—as we get closer to the event.

This week, we’re excited to share some stories and insights from Jane Guo of Dim Sum House by Jane G’s. Known for flavors inspired by regions across the Shanghai, Canton, and Jiang Nan regions of China, Dim Sum House’s menu features everything from lunch specials, dinner favorites, and uniquely crafted cocktails.

Q&A with Jane Guo at Dim Sum House by Jane G’s

What inspired your journey to become a chef?

Restaurants have always been a part of me. I feel that food is the perfect bridge between cultures, what better way to learn about another culture than to try the food first.

What has been the proudest moment of your journey as a chef?

Being able to operate our own space and business has been the biggest blessing. We're proud and appreciate everyday due to what the industry has provided for us and our staff.

Can you tell us about the recipe you shared, including the story behind it, its inspiration, and why you chose to submit it?

Dan Dan noodles are a staple of Chinese cuisine, specifically originating from Sichuan region. But most of the south of China have adopted noodles as a main source of carbohydrates. Dan Dan noodles were popular due to the simplicity of the ingredients and were the go-to for a quick lunch meal or grab and go.

How have you seen Center City evolve since opening?

We started our project in 2010, when the neighborhood barely had anyone on the streets past 5pm. We took over an old Hollywood Video space and were a little worried in the beginning on how the neighborhood would evolve. Since then, there's been nothing but construction and new buildings going up all around us. What was a quiet area with little to no foot traffic before blossomed into a bustling area with tons of restaurants and retail stores for shopping.

How does “dim sum” apply to your approach to the restaurant?

“Dim sum” is a style of dining and originates from popular tea houses located along the Silk Road. Meant to serve weary travelers with quick bites, pastries and dumplings, dim sum has now grown into a staple style of dining. Popular in Canton region, dim sum is now world renowned and enjoyed by many. Originally only available during brunch hours, we expanded the selection and made it available throughout the day.
