Sampan

In 2009, Michael Schulson of Schulson Collective (Harp & Crown, Graffiti Bar, Double Knot, and the Independence Beer Garden) opened his second restaurant, Sampan, at 124 South 13th Street. The Midtown Village restaurant specializes in contemporary Asian fusion cuisine with flavors from throughout the continent. The menu of small plates, satay, cold & hot, meat, fish and sides includes Korean kim chee fried rice, Malaysian shrimp, Vietnamese chicken prepared with cashew, lime and chili and Schulson’s signature edamame dumplings served in a sake broth.

Restaurant critic Craig Laban said, “few cooks have helped evolve and refine fusion cuisine with as much skill and mass appeal as Schulson.” The casual space with seating for 80 features a back-lit, color-shifting mural, reclaimed timber furnishings and an open kitchen. To drink, Sampan offers an extensive selection of sake, Japanese beers, and themed cocktails including the Ming Mule- a combination of vodka, lychee, mint and ginger. The popular happy hour hangout opens daily at 4pm.
